MSquared joins the Open Avatar Standards working group

At MSquared we believe the immersive internet should be open, interoperable and built for creators. We’re proud to announce that MSquared has joined the Open Avatar Standards Working Group, a community working together to define the future of avatar standards.

Why It Matters

Open avatars are not just about style. They are about giving users control and making it easier for creators and platforms to work together. Identity is central to this. People want avatars that truly represent them and can travel across experiences without losing who they are. Shared standards for formats, rigging and identity make avatars more portable and more powerful. By joining the group we can help shape these standards and make sure our tools work across the ecosystem.

We are joining as a founding member alongside OpenPage, Command Line, The Readyverse, Futureverse, THINK, Inceptive, future primitive, ERC-6551, Nifty Island and Beamable. Together we are focused on making avatars portable across platforms and preserving the identity that matters most to users.

The Avatar Creator: Open Source and Growing

Our Avatar Creator is fully open source and available today on GitHub. It is the front end of our avatars product, giving developers and users a way to create and customise high quality 3D avatars.

Recent updates include:

  • Emote support letting avatars express themselves with gestures and animations
  • Full outfit slots so clothing and accessories work as complete sets or mix and match pieces
  • Improved slot logic making it easier to combine parts without clashes
  • A better preview app where changes update in real time

These features make the Avatar Creator one of the most flexible open avatar projects available today. You can see the latest changes in action below using the output models from our open source Sandbox avatar converter as a demonstration.

What’s Proprietary

While the Avatar Creator front end is open source, our back end tools for merging and optimisation remain proprietary. These tools ensure that avatars scale to production scenarios with thousands of users. The outputs of those back end tools are still fully open and interoperable GLB files, so avatars created with MSquared remain compatible across platforms and standards.

What’s Next

Our roadmap includes:

  1. Adding support for more formats and rig types so avatars can move between platforms
  2. Expanding customization with new slots and asset types
  3. Optimising performance so experiences load faster and run smoothly
  4. Exploring ways to ensure users truly own their avatars with identity and ownership models that work across experiences
  5. Making it easier for contributors to get involved with clear guidelines and community tooling
