The top MSquared moments from 2024: a year of virtual firsts

It’s been quite a year for MSquared. We evolved our platform to be more accessible and self-serve, empowering brands, agencies and creators to quickly and efficiently turn their wildest (or very sensible) ideas into virtual worlds.

We got to collaborate with amazing brands like the BBC and MLB, powering their incredible interactive live events. And we pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in virtual worlds, breaking down barriers and creating the building blocks that will shape the future of immersive experiences.

Let’s take a look at some of the highlights.

We powered a global K-pop party

A virtual listening party brought K-pop fans together from around the world. We brought the tech and it was an excellent showcase for how an MSquared virtual world can help artists reach and engage a global audience. It also gave us the chance to debut our custom avatar tech so everyone could truly be themselves as they sang along to TWICE songs and danced the night away as part of a metaverse glowstick ocean.

Prof. Rob taught everyone a lesson

We’re all about building in the open and helping everyone shape the future of virtual worlds, together. And how better to do that than with CEO Rob Whitehead’s How To Metaverse? This series debuted in February to educate and inspire, covering how we tackle big metaverse challenges like scale, density, interoperability and composability. One memorable session had workshop attendees at NFT Paris dive into a virtual world during the live event.

Yuga Labs said it would build Otherside on MSquared

A massive moment in May as Yuga Labs announced it would build its Otherside metaverse on MSquared. And from that, there have been many more amazing moments, as we’ve worked together with Yuga, powering a range of events. These include massive multiplayer shooter Dragon, a virtual component to the real-world Apefest, and Otherside Poker Night, which raised a whopping $45,000 for charity.

Interoperability was solved in a baseball park

It was exciting when a new season of games began in the MLB virtual ballpark, syncing live broadcasts with 3D representations of the action, alongside voice parties, a virtual shop and scavenger hunts. But it was a whole new ball game when Bored Apes made an appearance, demonstrating how our tech breaks down barriers between virtual worlds by enabling complex assets to move between them.

We empowered creators with our MML Editor

One of the things we’re most excited about when it comes to tech is making things that help people more easily build amazing virtual objects of their own. A great way to do that is with MML, which we unveiled in 2023. This year, we took things further with the MML Editor and a virtual guided tour, making it easier than ever for people to create items of value for use within virtual worlds.

MSquared and the BBC orchestrated a unique concert

As part of European R&D project MAX-R, we worked on a groundbreaking classical concert that simultaneously took place in the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra’s studio in Manchester and the metaverse. It was a great showcase for our self-serve platform and for how virtual worlds can elevate traditional experiences, from the multi-screen broadcasts to trailblazing conductor Eímear Noone appearing in motion-captured form inside the metaverse.

Our tech fuelled 2,400 living avocados in a live Twitch game

Technically, they’re called Gourds. We think. But they look like adorable avocados with legs. Whatever they are, a peak of 2,400 of them battled it out on a single map in a Jitter gaming session. Chaotic? Just a bit. Fun? You bet. We’re looking forward to a whole lot more of this kind of thing in 2025. See you there!

Excited to start building?
